Typical Adelaide Roofing

"Typical Adelaide Roofs"

Main Roofing Materials:

  • Terracotta, concrete, and slate tiles: Commonly found on residential homes, these materials provide a durable and classic roof.
  • Iron and polycarbonate roofing sheets: Often used on modern homes and sheds, these materials are durable and long-lasting.

Less Common Materials:

  • Designer metal tiles: These unique tiles offer a distinct look and are often more lightweight than traditional tiles.
  • Asbestos: This material was used in some older roofs and requires a specialized approach due to health risks.

Common Roof Types:

  • Gable Roof: Two slopes that meet at a peak; one of the most popular styles.
  • Hip Roof: Similar to a gable roof but with slopes on all four sides, providing stability.
  • Flat Roof: A roof with a very low pitch, often seen in modern homes to achieve a minimalist look.
  • Skillion Roof: A single sloping roof, often used for extensions or sheds.
  • Butterfly Roof: A modern design where two skillion roofs meet in the middle, sloping inward to a central valley.

Colorbond® Steel Roof Maintenance

Colorbond® steel is a popular Australian choice for roofing, and it's built for durability. To keep it in top condition, here are the manufacturer's recommendations for maintenance:

  • Routine Cleaning: Regularly washing your roof with clean, fresh water is often enough, especially in areas that get rain. However, for areas not regularly washed by rain, like under eaves or in sheltered spots, the manufacturer recommends hosing down the surface every six months.
  • Deep Cleaning: If regular washing doesn't remove all the dirt, a mild solution of pure soap or non-abrasive kitchen detergent in warm water is recommended.
  • Tools: Use a sponge, soft cloth, or a soft-bristled nylon brush. Avoid using abrasive tools like steel wool.
  • Important: Never use harsh chemicals or solvent-type cleaners (like turpentine or petrol) as these can damage the finish. Also, be careful to remove any metal filings or debris from drilling after a job, as these can rust and stain the roof.

Tiled Roof Maintenance

To keep your tiled roof looking great and to help it last longer, here are some key steps for cleaning and maintenance:

  • Safety First: Before you start, ensure you have the proper safety gear, including non-slip shoes and a harness, especially on steep roofs.
  • Preparation: Remove any large debris like leaves and branches. Inspect the tiles for any signs of damage or cracks.
  • Soft Wash Method: The best approach for tiled roofs is a "soft wash," which uses a low-pressure water system and a non-abrasive, eco-friendly cleaner. This prevents cracking or dislodging the tiles.
  • Stubborn Grime: For tougher dirt, use a stiff brush and a solution of soapy water. Never use a high-pressure washer as it can cause significant damage.
  • Final Rinse: After cleaning, rinse the roof thoroughly with fresh water.
  • Optional Sealant: To prevent future moss growth and stains, you can apply a protective sealant after the roof is completely dry.
